With mixed feelings we completed the final day of cycling. Seemed to be up for 50km and a steady down to Nice for 30km. We are at 1,120m here
Small town after 50km we stopped for lunch.
Whole hillsides of solar panels.
We called it the gnome field.
Lots of these as you wind around the hill tops.
After kms of languid French countryside we were assaulted with the busyness and crowds of Nice. We regrouped at the Lebanon Cafe on the beach then cycled a further 2km along the promenade to a point that the cycle coaches chose for a swim, prosecco, photos and off load bicycles.
We are absolutely delighted to have completed the 1,400km with 17,678 metres climbing over 14 days. No mishaps or even any flat tyres. Few issues with the mechanics - lower crank died on the second day ( bike replaced) and our brakes ragged at the end.
It was more physically demanding than we anticipated due to the climbing.
Organisation was superb, accommodation ranged from 16th century mansion to a monks cupboard. Guides made sure we were fed and watered with endless encouragement and care. The cycle route kept us in awe each day.
Last night was our final celebratory dinner where speeches were given, Jeff opened proceedings with a clever rhyming verse. Tony, one of the guides had added some of the items used on the trip like 472 litres of water, 30kg of M&Ms, phenomenal number of Yorkshire tea.....
Tony on the left with the numbers and Mick with certificates for our valiant efforts.
Elaine in the front is one of the 75yr olds. Has cycled all over the world and no slug.
Today we moved to our airbnb in Old Nice by the port. On the 5th floor, lovely and quiet with aircon! Have had a quick stooge about. Tomorrow will hike up the Castle Viewpoint and go to Cours Sayela Market, maybe a swim in the afternoon. Have booked a day trip Monday to Monaco, Monte Carlo with a guide and aircondiotioned bus....no cycling required.
