After Sunday afternoon hiding indoors out of the heat we decided to do the one hour evening boat cruise on the Danube River. Lovely and cool on the top deck with good views other than a couple of women doing the "I am gorgeous" selfies constantly in front of us. They eventually got the message with us photo bombing behind them. Had a hilarious conversation with an English couple later who are also over tourists constantly taking selfies, blocking access, not looking at views. The guy said he " considered jumping over the side to get away from the pouters". 🤣
This is one of the tourist boats you can stay on as they cruise up and down the Danube.
Next morning we followed up on a recommendation from friends to visit the New York Cafe. This was built as a very smart coffee house in 1896 in the Italian Renaissance style where all the "in" crowd met; artists, writers etc. Became very run down after WW11 but was then restored in 2006 and is part of the Anantara New York Palace Hotel. We limited ourselves to a coffee each which was the equivalent of $42 NZD. Outrageous I know but you only experience these places once in your life.
This is 9.30am and busy. In the weekends they queue for however long to get in
Do not look at the prices Ethel
We moved on to the Gellert Thermal Spa we knew would be less crowded being a Monday and a plus being entry costs less. Known for its medicinal thermal waters since the 13th century it was then a hospital in medieval times, a bath house in 17th century and laterly 1918 swept up to the Art Nouveau style. It was damaged in WW11, what was not?, then restored. Extensive underground labyrinth of vaults. We lolled about enjoying the thermal 36C and cooler pools 26C and lying in the sun on loungers.
