Our last day in Granada. After a raucous Saturday night on the streets peace rained. To their credit the council staff are out there early on their street cleaning machine, emptying litter bins to keep the place smart. Unlike years ago when in Dublin and we waded through litter, bottles on a Sunday morning to find breakfast.
Domingo is a special day with stores and activities mostly closed. Time for church and family. Bells ring out from churches several times in the day to remind folks to attend. Families get together for very long lunches. Similar to Italy you see folks lining up at any open Pastels/pastry outlets to buy sweet treats for Mama or MIL depending on who is cooking lunch. We had walked to the Frederico Garcia Lorca park so felt a slice of lemon tart was called for to keep up appearance.
We started the day with a walk up to the San Miguel Alto church - now closed and in disrepair; falling down. Good views towards the east. Then made our way towards the city to check out the Calle Navas, a well known tapas street. Lunch starting at 2pm so only a few about at noon.
General observations: dachshunds are very popular both long haired and smooth. Often owned by a rather large person. Funniest thing we saw was one wee chap who had obviously had enough walkies so looked up at its owner who promptly put a carry bag down on the pavement, it stepped into said bag, dachshund made its self comfortable, Mum picks up the bag and totters on.
Smoking is very popular in the general population and sitting in bars anytime of the day with a beer or wine. Face metal also - rings/studs in noses, cheeks, eyebrows and lips. Latest trend in haircuts is shaving up to a mop top then dying remaing locks grey. Does not look too bad on some but an acquired taste. Lots of old boys with ponytails, ugh. Dress code is like the French as much bling as you can wear, fashionable shoes, clothing the best fashion and if a women full makeup. I am afraid we just do not cut the mustard with our tee shirts, shirts worn for the hundredth time. Many " I am beautiful" pouting and positioning goes on for photos everywhere. Not sure the actual background is important, could be anywhere.
Never seen so many opticians as in Seville and Granada. Type, look, colour glasses very important accessory. Plenty of Hammams (bath houses) due to the Arabic influence. We availed ourselves of one. Came out feeling terribly clean but not a patch on the one we tried in Marrakech in Morocco a few years ago. Then you came out with new skin, like a babies, as you had been loofered with sesame seed oils
Bitter orange trees are everwhere used as a streetscape tree or just random. They are basically inedible unless being made in marmalade, used as an ointment or for essence in cooked goods.
Out of control bougainvillea, have learnt do not water them and they just keep flowering. Our plant in Nelson will have a new regime on return.
Today, Monday, we got the bus to Cordoba. Having set out for the Granada Autobus Estacion in plenty of time one of our two town buses was a no show. Not deterred we got a taxi and made the Intercity bus on time. Again thousands if hectares of olives on the way from Granada to Cordoba.
Cordoba looks great at first glance and apartment will be quiet and is roomy which we are forever grateful for.
